How It Works & Privacy
How Alusio counts visitors without cookies, what gets counted, and why the numbers differ from Google Analytics.
How It Works & Privacy
Traffic Analytics is Alusio''s own tracking. The data is collected, stored, and displayed by Alusio. No third party receives your site visitors'' data through this feature.
Nothing to install. Tracking runs automatically on every page of your site as soon as the site is live. No code to paste, no plugin, no theme changes.
Cookieless tracking
Alusio does not set tracking cookies in your visitors'' browsers. Instead, each visitor is identified by a fingerprint recomputed daily from their IP address and browser type, hashed with a secret key that rotates every midnight.
The consequences matter:
- That fingerprint cannot track anyone across days. The same person visiting Monday and Tuesday is recorded as two separate identities, with no way to link them.
- Visitor IP addresses are never stored. Only the hash is, and it cannot be reversed back into an IP address.
- Because there is no cookie and no long-lived identifier, this feature does not require a cookie consent banner.
This is a deliberate trade: we exchange some accuracy for your visitors'' privacy. Read What Each Number Means to understand exactly what this changes, especially for the Visitors figure.
What gets counted
A view is counted when a page is actually opened in someone''s browser. Moving to another page within the site adds another view.
What does not get counted
- Bots and crawlers — Googlebot, Bingbot, uptime checkers, WhatsApp and Facebook link preview fetchers, and dozens more.
- Page prefetch — Alusio sites quietly prepare the next page when a visitor hovers a link, so it feels instant when clicked. That preparation is not a visit, so it is not counted.
- Security scanners — requests to addresses like
/wp-login.phpthat never existed on your site. - Theme demo pages — visits to theme previews do not enter your site''s numbers.
- Your own visits, if you enable it. See Excluding Your Own Visits.
Why the numbers are lower than Google Analytics
If you also run Google Analytics, Alusio''s numbers will typically be 10-30% lower. That is not a miscount. The reasons:
- Alusio filters bots more aggressively.
- Alusio does not count page prefetch.
- Some ad blockers stop tracking, which affects every analytics tool including Alusio.
- Tracking runs after the page finishes loading, so visitors who leave before that are not recorded.
The gap is consistent over time, so the trends you see remain trustworthy even though the absolute numbers differ from other tools. Do not compare Alusio''s numbers directly against Google Analytics; compare Alusio''s numbers against themselves over time.
How long until data appears
Visits are recorded immediately. The visitors online card at the top of the page shows the last 5 minutes of activity and refreshes itself every 30 seconds. The fastest way to confirm tracking is live: open your own site in another tab and watch that number go up.
